NHL official apologizes to Lane Hutson after phantom penalty call vs. Wild
What happened Tuesday night involving Lane Hutson sparked discussion all across the National Hockey League.
The Canadiens defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Tuesday, but one penalty stole the spotlight, at least in the eyes of many.
With 15 seconds left in the third period, Cole Caufield pulled the Habs out of trouble with the game-winning goal.
It was the kind of finish that brings the Bell Centre to its feet, even on a winter Tuesday night.
But before that, the end of the second period left a strange taste. On a Habs power play, Marcus Foligno ended up down on his knees at the blue line.
The official saw an illegal play by Lane Hutson, and the Canadiens defenseman was assessed a minor penalty.
It's very embarrassing for the NHL.
On the replay, you can see that the Wild player simply tripped on his own, and the Canadiens paid the price for a sequence that wasn't there.
What makes it even more notable is the context surrounding Eric Furlatt. He already has been past the 1,500-game mark in the NHL.
When someone with that much experience makes a mistake, it automatically becomes a story.

As reported by TVA Sports, the NHL official's reaction was immediate.
"Knowing he had made a bad decision, Furlatt made a point of going to apologize to Hutson before play resumed." - TVA Sports
Hutson also confirmed it after the game and revealed what referee Eric Furlatt told him.
Lane Hutson confirms referee Eric Furlatt apologized to him for the phantom tripping penalty assessed to him late in the 2nd period:
"he said 'sorry about that, that was a really bad call' and I said 'the game happens fast, it's all good."
"he said 'sorry about that, that was a really bad call' and I said 'the game happens fast, it's all good."
Credit to Furlatt for that reaction, and let's hope it doesn't happen too often, to put it that way.
