Officiating has been a major talking point at the start of the NHL playoffs. It caused quite a stir during the matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals, and it also drew attention during the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators.
Let's just say that, specifically in those two series, the officiating has been highly questionable.
Last night in particular, the criticism was harsh.
"The NHL has declared that crosschecks to the gums, once considered not allowed and bad, are actually allowed and good now."
- Steve Dangle
"I guess cross-checking Habs
Brendan Gallagher in the face is legal in the playoffs.
So this is legal in the NHL playoffs. What a joke NHL officiating is - especially in playoffs
- Stu Cowan
"The Canadiens aren't exactly helping themselves offensively in this game.
But the officiating in this game has been absolutely hilarious to watch."
- Marco D'Amico
In short, officiating has come under heavy fire, particularly last night in Washington, but also Sunday night in Toronto.
In response, the NHL has just made a change.
The National Hockey League is making a referee change for tonight's game in Toronto, and a similar move is expected tomorrow night in Washington for the matchup between the Capitals and the Montreal Canadiens
So, two new faces will be on the ice tonight.
"Referees Gord Dwyer and Pierre Lambert will be on duty for Game 2 of the series between the Leafs and the Senators tonight."
- Chris Johnston, TSN
Usually, the same officials work in two- or three-game cycles during the playoffs, but here we already have a change in the Toronto-Ottawa series.
A similar change is expected tomorrow night in Washington.
