Montreal Canadiens Cut Surprising First Player From Camp, Assign to OHL
After last night's preseason game against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Montreal Canadiens made their very first cut.
I'm quite surprised, because I was looking forward to seeing him (at least a little) in this 2025 Habs training camp, but now the tough young defenseman
Owen Protz has just been cut.
He is the very first player to be cut from the Canadiens' regular camp this year.
"The Canadiens have assigned defenseman Owen Protz to the Brantford Bulldogs, in the Ontario Hockey League."
- Montreal Canadiens
This is only a postponement for Protz, because I have the impression he will quickly become a fan favorite over the next few years.
Next year, we'll likely get to see more of him.
It's over for Owen Protz: he is cut by the Montreal Canadiens
Obviously, I wasn't expecting him to crack the Canadiens' lineup this season (unlike a certain
Arber Xhekaj), but I thought Kent Hughes would have given him a slightly longer audition.
To be continued over the next few years!
Owen Protz, 19 years old, is a left-handed defenseman standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 210 pounds.
He recorded 32 points in 67 games this season, with a +11 rating and 57 penalty minutes, but his impact in a game goes far beyond numbers and statistics.
It must be said that with
Florian Xhekaj,
Luke Tuch, Arber Xhekaj, and
Tyler Thorpe notably, who are still very much present at training camp, Martin St-Louis' squad will certainly keep a strong physical edge, particularly among the forwards.
