It seems there's quite a bit of behind-the-scenes action for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
In addition to the ongoing negotiations to try to sign Lane Hutson to a long-term contract, the site "The Fourth Period" has just reported that there are currently discussions underway to sign Mike Matheson.

"On Monday, veteran defenseman Mike Matheson expressed his desire to stay in Montreal beyond this season, and contract negotiations between the Canadiens and his agent are reportedly underway."

It really looks like Matheson is in Montreal to stay, but this will definitely be a situation to watch!
Mike Matheson, 31 years old, is a 6-foot-2, 196-pound left-shot defenseman who recorded 31 points in 80 games last season, as well as 62 points in 82 games during the 2023-24 season.
It's quite a luxury to have him in Montreal, alongside Kaiden Guhle, Lane Hutson, Noah Dobson, Alexandre Carrier, David Reinbacher, Arber Xhekaj, and company.
