Logan Mailloux's Revelations Explain Why the Canadiens Are Struggling Under Martin St-Louis
Through an article by TVA Sports, revelations from young defenseman Logan Mailloux help us better understand why things are going so poorly for the Montreal Canadiens.
In an article titled "The famous 'hybrid' system is confusing the young players", it's revealed that Martin St-Louis' current system is indeed confusing the young players.
Martin St-Louis' hybrid defensive system is a truly "hybrid" setup, a middle ground between "man-to-man" coverage and zone coverage.
It's the same system used by none other than the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, but there's a big difference.
The Panthers execute it flawlessly, while the young players of the Montreal Canadiens struggle to apply it effectively.
Even Captain Nick Suzuki, commented on the system:
"the young players on the team are getting familiar with a system they've never seen before."
This prompted Anthony Martineau to directly ask Logan Mailloux about it.
Logan Mailloux admits that the young players are still getting familiar with Martin St-Louis' defensive system

"It piqued my interest. I went to see Logan Mailloux in the locker room to ask if he had ever played in a hybrid system."
Mailloux's response was apparently quite clear: he had never seen this system before. Not in Laval, nor in London." - Via TVA Sports
These young players are indeed getting accustomed to the National Hockey League and everything that comes with it, including the exceptional speed of the game, and on top of that, they have to learn an entirely new system.
We wonder why things are going wrong to this extent. The Habs are the second-youngest team in the league, and the majority of the players have never played in this system.
"I think we're starting to get some answers here."

If that's truly the case, it's extremely promising for the future, because once the young players have assimilated and mastered it, it could become quite solid.
Who knows? Perhaps Martin St-Louis is just a bit ahead of his players, in the end. And if so, once they're all on the same page, the result could be impressive.
What an outstanding job by journalist Anthony Martineau!
