Canadiens mourn the loss of four-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Goyette
The Montreal Canadiens organization has just announced some sad news.
On Saturday, the Montreal Canadiens confirmed the passing of Phil Goyette.
At 92 years old, the former forward was part of an era when the Tricolore piled up wins and memories.
We're talking about a player born in Lachine, who wore the Canadiens jersey for seven seasons and earned a reputation as a respected figure everywhere he went.
On the ice, his name remains tied to four Stanley Cup championships with the Montreal Canadiens.
That's not just a number, it's a permanent mark on history, and it says a lot about the caliber of that era's locker room.
Phil Goyette built his career on respect
The statistics also tell the story.
In the NHL, he totaled 674 points, including 207 goals and 467 assists, and added 46 points in 94 playoff games.
But the most telling angle is his Lady Byng Trophy in 1969-70 with the St. Louis Blues.
That season, Goyette recorded 78 points in 72 games, with just 16 penalty minutes.
Yes, 16.
In a league that was far more physical back then, that's hockey played with class.
And his résumé doesn't stop in Montreal.
He also played for the New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres, before becoming head coach of the New York Islanders.
With the Islanders, he coached 50 games in 1972-73, in a difficult season, but a historic one nonetheless.
This morning, what stands out most is the image of a true Canadiens alumnus, and a man who left a lasting impression.
A fitting reminder that the word "class" still means something.
"It is with great sadness that the Montreal Canadiens learned of the passing of Phil Goyette on January 17. At 92 years old, the former forward was the second oldest among the Canadiens Alumni.
Born in Lachine on October 31, 1933, Goyette had a brilliant NHL career, suiting up with four teams, including seven glorious seasons with the Canadiens, with whom he etched his name on the Stanley Cup four times between 1957 and 1960."

Our condolences to a Habs legend.
