A Trade Involving David Savard Between the Canadiens and the Oilers Has Just Been Brought Up By TFP
Once again this year, the Edmonton Oilers are off to a slow start, and once again, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens could take advantage of it.
Some of their key offensive players are struggling, such as Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, among others. However, it seems that the team's general manager, Stan Bowman, is in search of reinforcements on defense.
At least that's what insider David Pagnotta mentioned on the site The Fourth Period, where the name of a Canadiens defenseman has come up in various rumors.
David Pagnotta fuels rumors of a trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers involving David Savard
In fact, this isn't the first time rumors regarding Savard have been reported.
Pagnotta suggests that the Oilers need to improve their penalty kill, which has been among the worst in the NHL since the start of the season, and that adding a veteran of Savard's caliber would be beneficial in this regard.
«They are currently last in the NHL in PK percentage. They definitely want to improve that aspect, but they are also mindful of where they stand financially at this time of year.
They have a little cap space; they have some room to maneuver right now, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're going to spend it. I think they're evaluating their options strategically.
I believe David Savard will be one of the options they'll consider because I think they absolutely want to bring in someone with physicality and a defensive mindset to that blue line.» - David Pagnotta
Those are very interesting comments from Pagnotta, and it's clear that David Savard would be an excellent option for the Oilers as the trade deadline approaches.
Savard will become a free agent next summer, and he would bring a wealth of experience to the Oilers' blue line, as he already has a Stanley Cup ring to his name.
It's worth noting that, according to Pagnotta, Stan Bowman is also looking elsewhere in the NHL for reinforcements for Edmonton.
The names of Cam Fowler of the Anaheim Ducks, Ivan Provorov of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Marcus Pettersson of the Pittsburgh Penguins have also been mentioned by the insider.
