Now that the Florida Panthers are officially eliminated from the NHL playoffs, it was time to take stock.
One of the things we learned was an interesting piece of news regarding
Ben Chiarot's future in Florida: it's highly unlikely that he'll sign a new contract there, or at least, if he re-signs with the Panthers, it will be for a short-term contract. (which is almost impossible)
Clearly, Chiarot will want a long- to mid-term contract and all indications are that it won't be in Florida. Chiarot, 31, is in his prime.
He was just traded for Ty Smilanic (a junior), a first-round pick and a fourth-round pick. He's going to want to take advantage of this to up his value and sign a long, paying contract.
"It's highly unlikely that Ben Chiarot will re-sign with the Panthers, not long term anyway." - Emily Kaplan
All signs point to the veteran defenseman's NHL future not being in Florida. This could be good news for the CH, because Kent Hughes could bring him back (keeping Smilanic and the picks, obviously), but also because it confirms that Montreal made a great move and a great trade.
It will be interesting to watch in July, but look for Ben Chiarot to be wearing a new uniform next season.
Could he come back to Montreal, would you like him to come back to Montreal?
He hasn't closed the door, but money could be tight at Kent Hughes.
