Selected at the very end of the second round in the last draft, the American defenseman had a thunderous season with Boston University, scoring 48 points in 39 games. This earned him a spot among the ten finalists for the famous Hobey Baker Award.
With this great season at the collegiate level, he was invited to represent the United States at the Ice Hockey World Championship. In his team's 4-1 victory against Austria, he scored a real gem, which you can see here:
But why am I talking about Lane Hutson today? A draft specialist made quite a statement about the Canadiens' prospect, and let's just say it's going to please many fans of the team.
Craig Button, a junior hockey expert with TSN, said that if Hutson was at least 5 feet 11 inches, he could have been considered the first overall pick in the last NHL draft.
Wow! And he's almost 5 feet 10 inches!
Button made this statement during the last World Junior Championship when Canadiens fans were discovering the young prospect.
As we know, Hutson's small stature probably hurt his draft ranking, but his talent is undeniable. His name has even been mentioned in some trade rumors, including ones that could have involved big names.
Even if these rumors were never really substantiated, there's no doubt that Hutson will be a top prospect for the Canadiens in the rebuilding phase and, as he is developing at the American collegiate level, he will have all the necessary time to develop.
We can't wait to see him in the Canadiens uniform.
