Surprise: A contract of over $10 million for Alex Newhook with the Canadiens?
In his latest article, the excellent journalist Eric Engels from Sportsnet has made a prediction about the contract that the Montreal Canadiens' newest acquisition, Alex Newhook, is expected to sign.
Due to the similarities between Newhook's situation and Kirby Dach's at the same time last year, Engels believes their contracts will be similar. Both were high draft picks, with Dach being selected 3rd overall and Newhook being selected 16th in 2019, the same year the Canadiens picked Cole Caufield at 15th overall.
Both players have struggled to secure a spot in their team's top-six lineup during their first three seasons, but they have the potential to break out with a new opportunity.
In summary, Engels suggests a four-year contract with an annual value of $3 to $4 million per season for Newhook.
That's what is currently being discussed.
Therefore, we would be talking about a deal with a total value ranging between $12 and $16 million.
It's a significant gamble to take on a player who has never amassed more than 33 points in a season, but as we saw with Kirby Dach, it can pay off.
