On Wednesday, the Vegas Golden Knights agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Phil Kessel on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million.
The veteran winger had 52 points in 82 games in his third full season with the Arizona Coyotes in 2021-2022 and led the team with 44 assists. The Coyotes struggled to produce last campaign and scored a league-worst 206 goals, but Kessel did collect an assist on 21 percent of that total.
Kessel has the longest active streak of consecutive games played in the league, playing his last 982 NHL games. The 34-year-old is eight games away from breaking the all-time record currently held by defenseman Keith Yandle.
This signing is typical of the Nevada organization, which seems to like to add big names to its roster. It will be interesting to see how the American performs in Vegas, as he has publicly admitted his love for poker and casinos...
The article from The Athletic, however, states that his love for cards never stopped him from being 100% focused when it was time to play hockey. The temptations will be much greater in Vegas though, a case to watch!
