It's funny how few people talked about a shocking statement delivered by Marc Bergevin on Wednesday afternoon at his surprise press conference. "Berg" came to take heat for his team, he dropped a not-so-subtle message to his boss and he also indicated that it would be unlikely that Shea Weber would play again on the day.

We suspect that possibility, but right now, everything seems to be heading towards an early retirement for the greatest captain of his generation. Much like Chris Pronger, he won't be announcing his retirement anytime soon in order to collect his salary. At least that's a logical conclusion... he won't be able to stay on the LTIR ad vitam ternam though!

In short, regardless of what happens with the LTIR and Weber, Bergevin seems to have drawn up a plan for his captain. A plan that doesn't appear to be that of a return to the ice.

Stu Cowan was one of those who dared to bring it up again on Wednesday night, so here's the part of Berg's speech to remember: "I have a plan in mind that I'm trying to figure out for Shea (Weber). Until I do, I'm going to keep that with me. I think it's unlikely he'll come back, you never know, but I would say it's unlikely!"

The 36-year-old defenseman is dealing with a host of injuries and it would be unlikely he would ever put on skates again... So, one of the Canadiens' soldiers has to step up and continue the culture that Weber has built.
