Ron MacLean isn't loved in the industry by any means, but he didn't do himself any favours last night.
MacLean Under Fire For Tasteless Comments
On the latest Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, Ron MacLean interviewed Brian Burke, who is a prominent supporter of the "Hockey For Everyone" initiative.
Despite recent setbacks, Burke expressed optimism about the movement and explained the purpose of Pride Night, which is to demonstrate acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community.
However, MacLean, who appears to be out of touch with the movement, introduced the concept of replacement theory during the interview, which was a surprising and upsetting comment for many fans. Canucks journalist
Daniel Wagner made his disapproval known.
Hey, so Brian Burke was great in that intermission segment on Pride Nights...
...but can we talk about Ron MacLean casually suggesting that we need to find a "compromise" and "middle ground" with replacement theory, which is a white supremacist conspiracy theory?
In addition to the previous comments, MacLean also mentioned Aristotle's philosophies during the interview, which was an outdated and irrelevant reference for the current discussion. This was seen as embarrassing for MacLean and others involved in the broadcast.
The issue at hand was straightforward, but MacLean managed to cause further embarrassment.
We are lucky to have people like Brian Burke in this industry to move these positive waves forward.
