In a recent edition of Insider Trading on TSN, Darren Dreger mentioned that the Canadiens are currently reportedly trying to make a deal to acquire a right-handed defenseman.
Dreger even says, without tying him to any team, that Pierre-Olivier Joseph of the Pittsburgh Penguins could be a very good option for the many Canadian teams looking for a defenseman, including the Montreal Canadiens.
During his appearance on the noon edition of the Poche Bleue on Wednesday, Guillaume Latendresse was not very enthusiastic about the idea of acquiring a new defenceman.
"I don't want us to look too hard. I don't want the Canadiens to be a team that plays for .500 this year. I really want us to keep the game plan in mind. We can't make the same mistake we made three years ago under Marc Bergevin. We did better than we expected. We made transactions and gave bad contracts like Mike Hoffman. They're a liability today." - Guillaume Latendresse
Latendresse is happy with what he is seeing from the youngsters right now and is confident that they will be able to get the job done and hold down the fort until Joel Edmundson and Mike Matheson return.
"Harris, Guhle and Kovacevic are getting the job done. There may be Chris Wideman in the lineup that I would like to see a youngster in his place. I don't have a problem with us staying put and the status quo being in place, right now. I'll maybe re-evaluate in a few weeks."
"If we can pull off a real hockey deal where we go get a young defenseman that we can develop and get into the lineup, let's move on. It's just that with the quality of defensemen coming up, I don't see why we would rush to make a trade in a rebuilding season." - Guillaume Latendresse
To add to what the NHL veteran said, it's rare for a hockey trade to happen in the middle of the season, especially in October. However, it will be interesting to see if Kent Hughes sees things the same way!
