In the context of the NHL trade deadline, and following the press briefing by Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, a topic resurfaced.
While Kent Hughes would not get into the subject yesterday, Caufield's agent, Pat Brisson, did make an interesting statement.
Present on RDS, see what he revealed:
"We should be talking with Kent by next week about Cole's contract!"
"We had talks with the Habs, with Kent, for a month/ month and a half before Cole's injury and before his surgery.
We should continue our discussions in the next few weeks now that the trade deadline has passed.
We should be talking more starting next week and hoping to get something done.
His contract is due this summer and we'll continue the talks."
- Pat Brisson
So that's good news and a welcome update.
It's surprising to see his agent come forward like this. Obviously, we definitely shouldn't have expected to see him go into detail or numbers, but just that he's willing to comment on the matter, it's interesting.
As for Caufield's famous contract, let's remember that there are two big options:
- The two- or three-year bridge contract
- The long-term contract, for seven or eight years.
The figures put forward so far are around 7.5 to 9.5 million dollars per season (depending on the duration, of course)
