Major Surprise Involving Cole Caufield: A New Chapter of His Career Has Officially Started
Martin St-Louis has set himself a mission with Cole Caufield. He intends to help him become a more complete winger, not just a scorer.
Last November, while he was in the midst of an offensive drought, the main person concerned even mentioned being open to focusing on his defense at the expense of his offensive production.
Yes [I am ready to sacrifice some offense], number 22 answered. I often talk about it individually with Marty. He teaches me to play with even more vigor in the defensive territory and to finish plays. I feel an improvement in my overall game, but there are always opportunities to give even more.

Even if it is not apparent at first glance, Caufield seems to have really taken his coach's advice to heart. A very interesting statistic about him shows that he is even in a class of his own for his defensive play.
Indeed, among the 210 players who have played at least 400 minutes at 5 on 5 this season, Caufield ranks 5th for goals per 60-minute span. In total, before the January 4th game against the Sabres, he was on the ice for only 12 goals while playing 5 on 5.
To put this in perspective, the reigning Selke Trophy winner, Patrice Bergeron, was on the ice for 1.73 goals per 60-minute span during the 2022-23 season. Remember, it was a record season for the Bruins!
Caufield for the Selke Trophy?
Maybe not yet, but the attacker's defensive play is definitely underrated.
A superb surprise.
