Latest: the best player from Magnitogorsk, of the KHL, officially arrives in Montreal and it is Philippe Maillet
On this Tuesday, September 12, just a few hours before the start of the Montreal Canadiens' rookie camp and a few days before the start of the main training camp, here is a profile of a player to watch, a recent acquisition by the Canadiens.
Philippe Maillet, a hidden card?
As described by Gabriel Simard (HF), Maillet is an intriguing name arriving in Montreal.
Originally from Lachenaie (Quebec), Philippe Maillet is a 30-year-old center player who recently evolved within the Washington Capitals organization.
However, he spent the last two seasons with Magnitogorsk Metallurg, from the KHL, and he has been very productive.
Maillet was easily their best player last season, accumulating 22 goals and 53 points. (in 66 games). The second highest scorer on his team gathered 44 points in as many games.
In fact, Maillet has produced everywhere!
- 83 points in 65 games with the Victoriaville Tigers (QMJHL)
- 54 points in 68 games in the AHL in 2019
- 44 points in 61 games in the AHL in 2020
- 21 points in 16 games in the AHL in 2021
- Best player on his KHL team in 2022 and 2023.
It is an acquisition that went under the radar, but without making too much noise, last July 1st, Kent Hughes signed one of the best players in the entire KHL.
Maillet signed a one-season contract with the Canadiens worth $775,000. A name to watch!
