Last-minute surprise development concerning Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens
In a press conference in the last few hours to discuss the trades involving Jeff Petry, Montreal Canadiens' General Manager Kent Hughes made another intriguing statement on a different matter.
To the surprise of many, Hughes revealed that the team plans to start the season with Carey Price in the official lineup, instead of immediately placing him on the summer-long LTIR (Long-Term Injured Reserve).
What does this mean and what changes?
By keeping Price on the team's official lineup to begin the season, Hughes provides himself with the option to place his star goaltender on the long-term injured reserve "during the season" (rather than on the offseason LTIR).
This will give him much greater flexibility, compared to if Price had been placed on the long-term injured reserve during the offseason. This approach is more advantageous due to the rules being more favorable.
"GM Kent Hughes says the team is planning to start the season with Carey Price on the roster then use in-season LTIR (as opposed to going into off-season LTIR)" - Priyanta Emrith
If Hughes effectively accomplishes this, it will open up a world of possibilities for him to make trades next year.
