Kent Hughes is about to make an announcement that will change the face of the Canadiens for the next 15 years
Matvei Michkov's name has been on everyone's lips lately. Social media is abuzz with his name, and there are numerous articles dedicated to him. The reason for this sudden popularity is quite simple: the NHL draft is only a week away, and it will be too late to talk about him then.
This is the time when we can still dream; and although it's rare to say this, it would not be an exaggeration to say that Kent Hughes is about to make an announcement that will shape the face of the Montreal Canadiens for the next fifteen years.
When he walks up to the podium to announce his first round pick, assuming that Michkov is available, the Canadiens' general manager will be making a decision with far-reaching consequences (one way or another).
Will he take a chance on a generational talent or will he ignore this young gun and leave him to haunt Montreal for the next decade?
Marc-Olivier Beaudoin brought up an excellent point earlier todaypeople are worrying too much about Michkov's red flags regarding his KHL contract and nationality; what about all of the positive aspects of Michkov?
"Matvei Michkov is a name that has been trending in the hockey world lately. His potential downside risks have been discussed extensively, but there should be even more talk about the incredible upside.
This young man has an immense amount of talent and could single-handedly change the face of the team for the next 10-15 years."
- Marc-Olivier Beaudoin
Kent Hughes may never have the chance to draft such a talented player again. Who is the last player to be drafted by the Montreal Canadiens who has Michkov's talent?
Advanced analytics experts are clear; Michkov has an unprecedented profile since Connor McDavid. At the same age, he favorably compares to Alex Ovechkin and reaching a 100-point season in the NHL is almost certainly within his reach.
Yes, Michkov does come with question marks, but let us not forget his immense potential. We don't want to be cruel, but Ryan Leonards and David Reinbachers pass much more often during drafts whereas Matvei Michkovs rarely do. Thus, Kent Hughes will have plenty of chances to acquire some of them later on.
