Even though the Habs got the first pick in the upcoming NHL draft, there are still some doubts about center Shane Wright, the top prospect in the 2022 draft.
Wright's season ended this weekend when his team, the Kingston Frontenacs, fell in five games in the second round of the Ontario Junior League playoffs.
While Wright's playoff stats weren't stellar, as he had 14 points in 11 games, don't necessarily think he won't produce once he gets to the NHL, and as Marco Normandin of Habsolumentfan.com reports, the young prospect has received quite a bit of support from his head coach with the Frontenacs.
Luca Caputi is in a good position to talk about Shane Wright's game and he made it clear why the young star's offensive stats have not been as spectacular as some would have expected this season.
I was playing him with younger players because half the league was first-year players. His linemates were not at the same level of strength and competition as he was but he was helping them get points. As the season progressed, these young players found their stride and we were able to get our veterans together. That's when Wright's offensive production took off.
No one understands how Matthew Soto or
Paul Ludwinski had such a great start to the season. It's because they were playing on a line with Shane Wright every night. These are details that people don't know. Shane put on his work boots, accepted his role and never complained. From the moment he started playing with
Martin Chromiak and
Zayde Wisdom, Wright's numbers skyrocketed and he finished as the eighth leading scorer in the league with 94 points in 63 games.
This is a statement that could reassure Canadiens fans if Shane Wright is selected by the team on July 7 at the Bell Centre.
