With the goaltending situation with the Habs, most hockey fans were not surprised to learn that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton attempted to acquire a goaltender at the trade deadline.
While there were rumors of bringing Ilya Samsonov to Montreal, a well-connected tipster mentioned that the Habs have their eye on a Finnish goalie who is having a full season with the St. Louis Blues.
As Mathis Therrien of Danslescoulisses.com reports, Jimmy Murphy, a contributor to Montreal Hockey Now, said the Habs are still keeping a close eye on goalie Ville Husso.
Husso has really established himself in the NHL this year with the Blues, even unseating Jordan Binnington as the team's No. 1 goalie.
According to Murphy, the Habs had already inquired about Husso at the trade deadline and it will be interesting to see what the Blues' management plans are for the Finnish goalie.
"When the Habs were scouting at the trade deadline, it wasn't necessarily just for that, they were also looking at the free-agent market. There's one big name, if he doesn't sign in St. Louis, and that's Ville Husso.
He's been a top-10 NHL goalie this year and he still doesn't have a contract. If Carey Price wants to be traded, he would be a guy to bring in. He's 27 years old, I don't know how much he's going to cost, but this is the first time he's been on the free agent market. He could come in and give a legitimate shot at winning and let the guys underneath him develop too." The 27-year-old Husso has 24 wins in just 35 starts this season and will be UFA this summer while Binnington is under contract through 2027 at a salary of $6 million a year.
Unless Binnington is traded in the summer, the chances of Husso reaching his full autonomy are quite good and, as we know, Carey Price and Jake Allen are not getting any younger. Not to mention that the health of the two Canadiens goalies will certainly be closely followed by the team's fans for the upcoming season.
