Former Calgary Flames first round pick Morgan Klimchuk has just announced his retirement from professional hockey, at the age of only 27.
He will join the Victoria Royals (Western Hockey League) as an assistant coach.
Klimchuk, 27, was drafted 28th overall in 2013 by the Calgary Flames. He will have played only one game in his NHL career.
Klimchuk had a very productive junior career, and a few good seasons in the American Hockey League, but was never able to play up to expectations.
He had a lot of offensive potential, and looked promising, especially after a 43-point (19-goal) performance in the AHL at age 21, but it ended there. He played for the Flames, Ottawa Sens and Toronto Maple Leafs.
His last season with the Belleville Senators: 26 points and 12 goals, in 49 games. A good reminder that producing in junior and in the AHL does not guarantee success in the NHL.
