Because he was drafted very high by the Montreal Canadiens, and because he was chosen over the generational talent Matvei Michkov (who is having a historic season in the KHL), many observers are worried about the performance of young defenseman David Reinbacher.
His tally of 6 points in 14 games is not very impressive, but that's not really the worst of it.
As we mentioned earlier this month, because the team was doing poorly, Kloten decided to fire their coach Gerry Flemming, a man the Habs held in high regard for Reinbacher's development.
The team's general manager, Larry Mitchell, has taken over the coaching, and it's now him in charge.
And this is bad news for Reinbacher.
« Kloten's new coach has reduced Reinbacher's ice time by about 4 minutes a game. Today, he has picked up his third assist in the last four games. May have been overtaxing him playing 21+. He's a teenager still building his strength and endurance. Smart move. » - Grant McCagg
McCagg continues by saying that it might be good for Reinbacher to play less, but personally, it worries us.
Think of young players like Thomas Chabot and Kaiden Guhle, who were already used to playing 25 to 30 minutes per game before arriving in the NHL. (even Noah Dobson)
This was extremely beneficial for them, and it's the development model we would have also preferred for Reinbacher, but well, we are not experts.
An average playing time of 17 to 18 minutes per game is what Reinbacher might be facing for the rest of the season (as opposed to the 21 to 22 minutes he experienced earlier this season and last year).
We want it to work out for Reinbacher so bad, and for him to become a Moritz Seider or a Noah Dobson! For now, we are worried, but we trust the right people!
