We have just learned that Florida Panthers number one defenseman Aaron Ekblad has reportedly been placed on the long-term injured list.

A truly catastrophic scenario for the Panthers, who lose one of their big pillars, one of their best players, and most importantly, their only dominant defenseman.
They are now left with a very weak defensive squad, probably the worst in the NHL.
Marc Staal - Radko Gudas
Gustav Forsling - Lucas Carlsson
Josh Mahura - (Player to be recalled from the AHL)
Let's remember of course that this unfortunate news has a direct impact on the Montreal Canadiens, who own the 2023 (unprotected) first round pick from Florida. You can guess that with Ekblad's long-term absence, this first round pick has just become extremely valuable.
Recall the famous trade in question here:
To the Panthers: Ben Chiarot

To the Habs: 2023 1st round pick (unprotected), 2022 4th round pick, prospect Ty Smilanic

Smilanic, 20, was drafted 74th overall by the Panthers in 2020.
A deal that clearly looks like a steal for Kent Hughes (especially considering Chiarot is now playing for the Detroit Red Wings after signing there this summer)
