On the night of July 7th at the Bell Centre, let's just say that the fans present got their money's worth with all the action that took place during the first round of the NHL draft.
The selection of Juraj Slafkovsky by Kent Hughes, the look on Shane Wright's face at the Habs table and of course when Gary Bettman took the podium to announce two trades involving the Habs.
But did you know that we almost heard the NHL commissioner again with his famous We have a trade to announce?
In an interview with an Austrian newspaper, Marco's dad Peter revealed that the Buffalo Sabres would have made a very serious offer to acquire the eighth overall pick, one spot ahead of their own draft rank, and thus have the opportunity to select the young prospect.
However, the Red Wings, who selected eighth overall, beat the Sabres to the punch by drafting Kasper, a player highly coveted by GM Steve Yzerman. One spot later, the Sabres selected center Matthew Savoie, who had a 90-point season with the Winnipeg Ice in the Western Junior League.
Time will tell in a few years if the Wings were right to hold on to their pick and select Kasper, who will join one of the best groups of young prospects in the NHL.
