Ever since Shea Weber was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights for Evgeny Dadonov, Canadiens fans have been wondering who will be the team's next captain.

The names of Nick Suzuki, Brendan Gallagher and Joel Edmundson have been suggested by many experts over the last few months, but as Marc-Olivier Cook of Danslescoulisses.com reports, there seems to be some news in this matter.

According to Jimmy Murphy of Montreal Hockey Now, it would appear that a source close to the team has told him that the choice would be between Suzuki and Gallagher.

So that means Joel Edmundson would not be considered for the captaincy, even though he is a logical candidate and also a well-respected teammate in the Habs locker room.

The possibility of Gallagher being the team's captain is not new, as he will be in his 11th season in Montreal in 2022-2023. Despite the fact that he has slowed down a lot in the last two years, he is still an undisputed leader on the team and his experience will only be beneficial for the youngsters of the organization.

As for Suzuki, many experts see him as a captain in the making, but some have suggested the idea of having a transition captain, like a Gallagher for example, to allow him to gain experience.

Could an announcement be imminent? Maybe, but it's a safe bet that there will be a captain on board for the 2022-2023 season.
