We witnessed an unusual scene during last night's game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings.

It wasn't shown on television, but as tradition used to have it in Detroit (especially back in the day), octopuses were thrown onto the ice in the middle of the game.
You can see the footage below:
It sparked a lot of chatter yesterday in Detroit (and is still being discussed this morning on the radio there), because it's creating a bit of a debate.
Should fans really be expelled from the arena simply for throwing octopuses onto the ice?
After all, it's a major tradition there!

Red Wings fans reportedly ejected from the arena for throwing octopuses onto the ice during the Montreal Canadiens game

That being said, per the NHL's new code of conduct, It is strictly forbidden to throw any object onto the ice!
"Safety: The physical well-being of fans, Players, and arena staff is a top priority. Any disruptive, irresponsible, and/or illegal behaviors that threaten the physical well-being of others are forbidden. This includes participating in or instigating altercations (physical or verbal), throwing objects, or engaging in other inappropriate or destructive behaviors by reason of intoxication, chemical impairment, or otherwise."

"Anyone who is determined to have engaged in conduct contrary to the values of the League, its Member Clubs and/or its Players, and which otherwise violates this Policy, will be subject to penalties including, but not limited to: possible seat relocation, ejection, suspension and/or a lifetime ban from future NHL events."

- NHL Code of Conduct

Of course, it's obvious there was no malicious intent from the fan who tossed an octopus onto the ice (just to carry on the Red Wings tradition), and that's exactly why this is stirring some controversy in Detroit today, but the rule is still very clear.
We'll see how it develops!
Let's also recall that Martin St-Louis' squad came out on top with a 5-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings, thanks to stunning performance and goals scored by Oliver Kapanen, Zachary Bolduc, Mike Matheson, Alexandre Carrier, and Juraj Slafkovsky.
