Unexpected statement from Patrick Kane's agent: Hughes and the Canadiens would have been seriously happy to welcome him
While his client Patrick Kane has just signed a new contract with the Detroit Red Wings, agent Pat Brisson was interviewed by Jean-Charles Lajoie on TVA Sports before the game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
They discussed several interesting topics, including the following passage.
«Did the Montreal Canadiens make an offer to Patrick Kane?»
Brisson did not directly answer the question, obviously, but the title of the article is quite revealing.
«Kent Hughes would have been happy to welcome Patrick Kane.» - Pat Brisson
However, there was clearly a salary issue. And frankly, we must admit that we are surprised that the subject was even brought up during the interview with JiC, because the Canadiens do not really match the profile of the contending team sought by Kane.
«If I had told Kent Hughes: 'Pat is interested in coming to Montreal', he would certainly have been happy to welcome him. Many teams were up against the cap for him.» - Brisson, via TVA Sports
He adds that money was no longer a priority for Kane at this stage of his career.
«We agreed to $2.75 million with the Red Wings to still leave them a million of cap space at the trade deadline. [...] Also, Kane was familiar with Alex DeBrincat, which was a factor.» - Brisson, via TVA Sports The agent also confirms that there were discussions with many teams, including three in particular.
Finally, Brisson was also questioned about Cole Caufield and his start of the season with the Montreal Canadiens.
«I'm not worried about Cole Caufield. Right now, he might be on track for 26 goals, but I wouldn't be surprised if he scores 36 or 40.» - Brisson, via TVA Sports
