We just had a major NHL trade involving goaltender Jacob Markstrom, a trade that has a direct impact on the Montreal Canadiens.

Why? Because Markstrom has just been traded to the New Jersey Devils, and therefore, he displaces Jake Allen as the number one goaltender there.

Jacob Markstrom traded to the New Jersey Devils

Recall that on March 8th, Kent Hughes traded Jake Allen to New Jersey for a third-round pick in 2025, a pick that can become a second-round pick in 2025 if Jake Allen plays 40 games during the 2024-2025 season.

Knowing that Allen played 13 of the last 19 games of the Devils' season, it was promising, and we believed we would receive a valuable second-round pick.

But now that the New Jersey Devils have acquired Jacob Markstrom, we can definitely say goodbye to that second-round pick.

Jake Allen will be relegated to the role of backup goaltender, and unless there is an incredible turn of events, he will not play more than 20-25 games.

"The Canadiens' pick from the Devils could become a second-round pick if Jake Allen plays more than 40 games with the Devils next season.

That now seems unlikely with Jacob Markstrom heading to New Jersey." - HabsOnReddit

In any case, this could definitely shake up the market.
