Kent Hughes and the Canadiens Pulled Off a Steal Trade Exactly One Year Ago Today
One year ago today, the Montreal Canadiens indeed completed a major trade on offense with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Looking back on this trade which, as David Ettedgui mentioned very recently, changed everything for the Habs.
On August 19, 2024, right in the middle of summer, Kent Hughes completed a trade with the Blue Jackets to acquire forward Patrik Laine along with a 2026 2nd-round pick, in exchange for young defenseman Jordan Harris.
One year ago today, Patrik Laine became a Montreal Canadien
Following this trade, Laine scored 20 goals in 52 games for the Tricolore, good for a pace of 32 goals over 82 games, and he was an important player in the quest for a playoff spot.
Ironically, he helped the Canadiens collect two more points than the Columbus Blue Jackets in the standings, which was enough to push Montreal into the playoffs (ahead of CBJ).
Today, I think we can say this was a great successful trade for Kent Hughes, especially since Laine loves Montreal.
Also, let's remember that a year ago, Laine arrived in town without having stepped on the ice for several months, and in questionable physical shape.
This year, Laine has been on the ice every day in Brossard since the very beginning of summer, his work ethic is incredible, his preparation is optimal, and he is in the best physical shape he has been in for a very long time.
This is promising!
