The name that's on every Canadiens fan's lips since the lottery is Matvei Michkov. The young Russian forward is sparking debate not for his talent, which is immense, but for the surrounding uncertainty.

Following the lottery, Kent Hughes publicly admitted that he would strongly evaluate the option, but that the case is very complex.

"I think Michkov is certainly a special case. We will do our homework as well. Not just on the fact that he is Russian and under contract in Russia for the future, but also to determine what kind of player he is, his character, and how we compare him to other options."

"It scares us more than any other prospect for reasons that are obvious. But as of today, if we determine that Michkov is much more talented than the other available players, we will have decisions to make. For now, we have a lot of work to do on his case. First, as a player. Second, on the risks that will come with it. And from there, we will make a decision." - Kent Hughes

According to what journalist Darren Dreger reported on Thursday, Hughes would not be too keen on drafting the young Russian. He might even opt to move up into the top 4 to avoid having to make a difficult choice.

Wow! That would be huge!

As many have said, there seems to be a clear talent drop off in the 2023 draft class after the top five prospects. Securing an Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson, or Will Smith would be a very good option for Hughes.

The problem here is that the teams ahead of the Canadiens will certainly want to keep their picks. Unless Hughes gives a lot, he will have to stay at the 5th position. The other solution would be to move down, but the risk of always having Michkov's ghost in the wings would still be there!

The draft is still far away, and many things can happen between now and then!
