This could obviously be done internally, but it could also come from outside.
Will the Montreal Canadiens' general manager call the Anaheim Ducks to try once again to finalize the acquisition of Trevor Zegras?
It's not impossible, but I wouldn't count on it too much for now.
If Kent Hughes wants a quick and affordable solution, we are at the point in training camp where interesting names start to become available on the NHL waiver wire.
The most interesting name currently available for free is certainly Nikita Alexandrov of the St. Louis Blues.
Let's recall that the Habs are among the five teams with the highest priority for claiming players on waivers, which is an advantage that could benefit Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
They have used this advantage in the past, and with Laine's injury, they could do so again.
Alexandrov, 24, is a 6-foot-1, 177-pound German forward. He was a second-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and has amassed 47 points in his last 49 games in the AHL.
He also has over 50 games of experience in the National Hockey League.
More details to follow.
