The verdict is in, as general manager Kent Hughes has officially submitted the name of forward Samuel Blais to NHL waivers.

This roster move seemed inevitable, considering that the Quebec native had been left out of the lineup in the team’s most recent games.
The Montreal organization must manage its 23-man roster very tightly with players nearing a return to action and with potential trades looming tomorrow.
However, Blais is not the only player to see his name appear on the availability list today.
Three other names are now in the shop window and will be hoping to find a new role elsewhere in the NHL.

Kent Hughes makes a move and places Samuel Blais on NHL waivers, but that’s not all today!

First, we note the presence of centerman Ryan McAllister, who belongs to the Florida Panthers organization.
He is a young forward who will try to seize his opportunity if another team decides to claim him.
Next, goaltender Filip Larsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins has also been made available for a free claim.
Goaltenders are often prized commodities on waivers by teams dealing with injuries in net.
Finally, the St. Louis Blues have decided to place defenseman Samuel Johannesson on waivers.
It’s a day that offers a bit of everything: a center, a left winger, a defenseman, and a goaltender.

A 24-hour waiting period

For Samuel Blais and his peers, the next 24 hours will be decisive for the rest of their season.
The league’s other 31 teams have until tomorrow afternoon to signal their interest in one of these players.
If the Canadiens’ winger is not claimed, he will logically have to report to the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League.
His experience and physical style would certainly be major assets for the farm team.
This wave of waivers comes at a strategic point in the calendar, as general managers fine-tune their rosters ahead of the much-anticipated Olympic break.
It will be worth watching to see whether a rebuilding team takes a chance on a profile like Johannesson’s or Larsson’s.
