The rumors have been circulating for a while, but one of the most reliable sources has just confirmed that the Montreal Canadiens are indeed involved.
Kent Hughes is very much digging into the Nazem Kadri file.
Insider Elliotte Friedman discussed the veteran center’s situation on NHL Network.
According to his information, the Canadiens are definitely among the teams that have shown interest in the Calgary Flames forward.
Friedman adds, however, that Montreal is not alone in the race, as "a few other" teams are also monitoring the situation.
While the desire to acquire the player appears real on Kent Hughes’ side, one major obstacle is currently slowing down the completion of a deal.
The hockey expert notes that “the biggest issue is salary retention.”
Nazem Kadri carries a significant salary, and for a trade to materialize, the Flames would have to agree to retain part of his cap hit.

That’s where the Canadiens’ general manager’s job becomes more complicated.
Convincing a team to retain salary often requires higher compensation in return, whether in draft picks or prospects.
Adding Kadri would strengthen Montreal’s center depth with a mix of offense and toughness, but the acquisition cost remains the core of the debate.
For now, contact has been made and interest is confirmed, but the numbers will have to work for Kadri to put on the blue-white-red jersey.
It’s now officially confirmed that Kent Hughes is exploring a trade for Calgary Flames center Nazem Kadri.
