We officially have our first contract buyout of the 2025 NHL offseason. If Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens want to quickly address a specific need and bring in a versatile defenseman who can play both the left and right side, here's the first name available for free.
After officially clearing NHL waivers, defenseman TJ Brodie has been bought out by the Chicago Blackhawks.
T.J. Brodie Becomes the First Player Bought Out This NHL Offseason
He's a solid defensive defenseman, a reliable veteran, but he was simply earning too much money.
"TJ Brodie has been bought out by the Blackhawks."
He was making close to $4 million per year, which is too high, but he's still effective, as you can see in the chart above.
At 35 years old, Brodie is a 6-foot-2, 187-pound left-shot defenseman who has tallied 358 points in 962 career NHL games.
Last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, he recorded 10 points in 54 games with a -18 rating.
He was under contract at $3.75 million per year through 2026.
Back when he was with the Calgary Flames, Brodie was one of the best two-way defensemen in the NHL, posting seasons of 41 and 45 points (in just 70 games).
You can also look at his plus-minus rating over the years before joining Chicago.. +17, +10, +20, +23, +7, +29... He's definitely an intriguing name!
Would you sign him as a 6th or 7th defenseman for under $2 million per year?
