The Maple Leafs forward is now the biggest unrestricted free agent currently on the market.
Marner is having a stellar season and, like Rantanen, he is expected to break the bank during the offseason.
However, there hasn't been much talk about negotiations between the Maple Leafs and the star forward's camp.
Everything indicates that he will test free agency this summer, which has a certain
Georges Laraque dreaming.
Georges Laraque suggests Mitch Marner's acquisition for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens
During a live segment on
BPM Sports, the former Canadiens player started discussing how the
Montreal Canadiens must do everything they can to sign Mitch Marner this summer.
Alongside his co-host, Stéphane Gonzalez, Laraque projected into the future, imagining a potential Marner-Demidov duo. He also mentioned that Marner wouldn't be afraid of the pressure of playing in Montreal since he already plays in Toronto.
Gonzalez, for his part, added that it would be a middle finger from the Leafs forward to join the enemy, given that the team tried to trade him.
Of course, this is pure speculation, and at this time, no serious rumors have linked Mitch Marner to the Montreal Canadiens.
However, with the significant increase in the salary cap in the coming years, Kent Hughes will have enough money to enter the free-agent market, and we are still waiting for a major acquisition from the Canadiens' GM.
We know he wants to make a big move this summer, and we know he tried something for Mikko Rantanen, so why not Marner?
