We've got some action on the NHL waivers today, involving the recent opponents of the Montreal Canadiens and forward Kasperi Kapanen.

In the last few moments, it was announced that the Edmonton Oilers have claimed Kasperi Kapanen off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

Let's not forget that just a few months ago, at the start of the 2024-2025 season, these same Blues submitted two offer sheets for two Oilers players (Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg). And now, it's Edmonton's turn to take a player from St. Louis.

Kasperi Kapanen claimed off NHL waivers

See the official announcement from the Edmonton Oilers:

«The Oilers have claimed forward Kasperi Kapanen off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

The right winger has recorded 85 goals and 124 assists in 470 career NHL games.»

At 28 years old, the 6-foot-1, 194-pound forward is a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2014 (22nd overall), and he has indeed accumulated 209 points in 470 career NHL games, including 85 goals.

He's the most interesting player to have been placed on waivers in quite some time, and he's earning only $1 million per year until the end of the current season.

Considering that the Edmonton Oilers were behind the Montreal Canadiens in the waiver priority order, we can deduce that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton simply chose to pass on Kapanen, who happens to be Oliver Kapanen's cousin.

Do you think it was the right decision?

In the comments section, there are, of course, many references to this little «revenge» by the Oilers against the St. Louis Blues.

Details to follow.
