Now that David Savard has retired, there's a hole on the right side of Montreal Canadiens' defense.

Some fans of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge might say that gap will be filled by David Reinbacher or Logan Mailloux, but a well-known Montreal host and journalist has someone else in mind, a Stanley Cup champion.
On BPM Sports, Martin Lemay suggested that Kent Hughes should try to convince Aaron Ekblad to join the Canadiens this summer, as reported by the site HABSolumentFan.
"Aaron Ekblad should sign for $7.8 million.

That's still within the Canadiens' salary range, $7.8 million, like Nick Suzuki or less."

- Martin Lemay

An interesting proposal!
The first overall pick of the 2014 Draft will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, and with the acquisition of Seth Jones at the trade deadline, it's unlikely the big right-handed defenseman will return to sunny Florida.

Proposal for the Canadiens to acquire former first-overall pick Aaron Ekblad and pair him with Kaiden Guhle

Lemay added that not only would Ekblad be a major pickup for the Canadiens, but he envisions him playing alongside Kaiden Guhle.
"I started writing down defense pairings on paper.

A young guy with an older guy, a young guy with an older guy, a young guy with an older guy.

Hutson with Carrier, Matheson with Reinbacher.

Guhle-young or old?

If Guhle is an old guy, pair him with Mailloux!

But if Guhle is a young guy, then with Ekblad!"

- Martin Lemay

Let's just say the idea of bringing in an experienced defenseman makes sense for the Canadiens, but at $7.8 million, as Lemay suggests, it's starting to get pretty pricey.
Especially considering that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton's top priority, at least in the short term, is to strengthen the offense.
