Since the Anaheim Ducks acquired prospect Cutter Gauthier, rumors of a trade involving another talented young player from the organization, namely Trevor Zegras, have been circulating heavily in recent days.
It's not very surprising because since the start of the season, Zegras, who was drafted ninth overall by the Ducks in 2019, has had a lot of troubles, first with disappointing offensive performance and especially since he will be out of the game for a few more weeks due to a hip injury.
That said, the chances of him being traded soon have somewhat decreased over the past few weeks, but as reported by [Marqueur.com] Canadiens fans could be happy and surprised by the possible outcome in this case.
According to journalist Shayna Goldman of The Athletic, the Canadiens are at the top of a list of six teams to which, in her opinion, Trevor Zegras could very well be traded.
Here are her explanations:
The Canadiens don't need Zegras as a first-line center, that's Nick Suzuki's role. Now that Suzuki has become a player who excels at both ends of the ice, this opens the door to a second line where Zegras would be more comfortable. The Suzuki-Zegras duo would help spread out the points and force opponents to rethink their defensive assignments instead of focusing on neutralizing Suzuki and Cole Caufield's line.
Zegras would only add long-term potential to the young core of the Canadiens, even if he has some flaws in his game. Time spent with a head coach like Martin St-Louis could help him find ways to improve his overall skills.' The journalist also mentions that if the Ducks were looking to trade Zegras, it's because the California team now has several very talented young forwards in Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson, and most recently Cutter Gauthier.
Furthermore, McTavish and Carlson also play center, which is starting to create some congestion at that position.
That's all well and good except that even with the Canadiens, there could also start to be a lot of traffic at center if Zegras were to land in Montreal.
Will Kent Hughes find a way to make room for him if he and his Ducks counterpart come to an agreement?
