Patrick Roy's Islanders attempting to finalize a trade for Jets star forward
After the early elimination of his Islanders in the playoffs, General Manager Lou Lamoriello is already working on a trade
Clearly, Roy lacked offensive talent at his disposal this season, and he was limited in what he could achieve as head coach.
His General Manager wants to address this.
Lou Lamoriello wants to acquire a top-tier forward for Patrick Roy: he is attempting to finalize a trade for Nikolaj Ehlers from the Winnipeg Jets
This would indeed be a significant change for Patrick Roy to be able to rely on a player of Nikolaj Ehlers' caliber.
It should be noted that Ehlers is available on the trade market, as he has indicated that he does not intend to sign a new contract with the Winnipeg Jets (similar to Martin Necas with the Carolina Hurricanes).
«Several sources have told The Hockey News that the Islanders have inquired about the Jets' forward Nikolaj Ehlers.
The 28-year-old player, who has one year left on his $6 million per year contract with a modified no-trade clause involving 10 teams, rebounded after a challenging 2023-24 season, scoring 25 goals and 36 assists for 61 points in 82 games.
His 61 points mark the second-highest point total of his career, following his 64-point season in 2016-17.» - The Hockey News
This is interesting news for Patrick Roy's squad, and we hope it works out for them.
Adding Ehlers to Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, Ilya Sorokin, and Noah Dobson, begins to form a very strong core for the New York Islanders.
They have solid depth, they play well, they have a good coach, they have strong goaltenders, and they are very complete, but they lack pure talent.
This is what Ehlers would bring.
A story to follow!
