Oliver Kapanen's bench reaction after Lane Hutson's OT winner speaks volumes
We were treated to a great scene on the Montreal Canadiens' bench, just moments before the goal scored by Lane Hutson in overtime.
In Dallas, a sequence on the Habs' bench truly stole the spotlight in overtime.
On Sunday, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime. Lane Hutson's game-winning goal came with 1 minute and 20 seconds remaining, and the bench's reaction quickly made the rounds online.
The Club later shared the small moment that put a smile on everyone's face.
A powerful scene involving forward Oliver Kapanen
We see Oliver Kapanen celebrating the goal as if it were his own, standing up with his arms in the air, as the entire bench erupts at once.
In a season where everything is closely scrutinized, this kind of image speaks volumes.
This win also carries significant weight in the standings, as Montreal now sits with a 23-13-6 record. It also serves as a direct response after a 2-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues the night before.
Hutson finished the night with a goal and an assist, and he had the final say. On the winning play, he received the puck following an offensive-zone faceoff win by Phillip Danault, then fired a wrist shot from the right circle.
At 21 years old, he continues to turn up the volume around his name. His contract is also fueling discussion, as he is signed to an eight-year extension worth 70.8 million. The average annual value is 8.85 million, and the deal begins in 2026-27.
When you sign a contract like that, every overtime goal becomes a calling card, and every performance like this reinforces that it's a bit of a steal by Kent Hughes.
Offensively, Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring, and Kapanen also found the back of the net.
Phillip Danault also deserves credit, as he picked up assists on both Gallagher's goal and the game-winning goal. Danault is 32 years old, carries a 5.5 million cap hit per season, and just added another 2 points to an already tight stat line.
In goal, Samuel Montembeault stopped 24 shots and kept the game within reach. When your goaltender does that, the bench can afford to celebrate without holding back. And in this case, Kapanen did it for everyone.
It shows just how special something is happening inside that locker room.
