In the last few minutes live from Brossard, we officially got the Montreal Canadiens' first lines of the 2025-26 season.

Two big decisions were made, as young Ivan Demidov will start the season on the third line with Alex Newhook and Oliver Kapanen. And the bad news is confirmed for Patrik Laine!
He will start the season on the team's fourth line.

Martin St-Louis unveils his lines to start the season: decisions for Ivan Demidov and Patrik Laine

So here's how it looks:
"Line combinations and defence pairings at Habs practice this morning in Brossard.

Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky
Newhook-Kapanen-Demidov
Bolduc-Dach-Gallagher
Anderson-Evans-Laine

Matheson-Dobson
Guhle-Hutson
Xhekaj-Carrier"

- Stu Cowan
"It's become a classic between the two men, Patrik Laine and Ivan Demidov practice their passes and one-timers at the end of training."

- Pat Guillet
Barring a major surprise or a big reversal, these are Martin St-Louis' official lines and pairs to open the new season.
Patrik Laine, 27 years old, is a 6-foot-4, 208-pound forward who tallied 33 points in 52 games last season, including 20 goals, and earns $8.7 million per year through the end of this season.
Yes, that's a hefty price for a fourth-liner, but he brings so much to the power play!
It will be up to Laine to give more at 5-on-5 if he wants to move back up to the second line and earn more even-strength minutes.
Do you think it's a good decision by Martin St-Louis to send him to the fourth line to start the season?
