When Canada named Samuel
Montembeault as the country's third goaltender for the Four Nations Face-Off, many took the opportunity to criticize.
According to them, the goalie was on the team simply because he was French-speaking and the only Quebecer on the roster.
With the Olympic Games fast approaching, the English-French debate will certainly resurface.
In fact, it has already started, and it's because of Toronto journalist Steve Simmons.
Samuel Montembeault will again be on the roster because he speaks French, according to Steve Simmons
Among those 42 players, we find from the Montreal Canadiens:
Nick Suzuki,
Noah Dobson, and of course, Samuel Montembeault.
That was all it took for Simmons-who never holds back-to claim that the Quebec netminder made the list because he speaks French.
"Montembeault is French Canadian, which helps his chances of being the third goalie."
- Steve Simmons
If he had been invited just to fill the French-speaking quota, surely other goaltenders would have been invited to the camp.
Fortunately, other journalists are stepping in to set Simmons straight!
Jimmy Murphy, in fact, described his colleague's comments as disrespectful toward the Canadiens goalie's talent.
It's unfortunate to see this debate constantly resurface when the goal is to gather the best players in a country-not to please one particular nation.
