Two years ago, Arber Xhekaj was a revelation for the Montreal Canadiens, and last year, we witnessed Juraj Slafkovsky's breakout in the second half of the season.
Recently, a well-known journalist gave his take on who he believes will be the Canadiens' breakout star in 2024-2025.
During an appearance on BPM Sports, Richard Labbé stated that he expects Alex Newhook to be the Canadiens' breakout player this season.
With a few games already played this season, do you think this prediction is off to a good start?
As mentioned in the short video above, the veteran journalist is convinced that number 15 will make his mark.
He's currently playing with Kirby Dach, and Patrik Laine is expected to join them eventually.
Even though he's less flashy than his current and future linemates, Newhook still managed to tally 34 points, including 15 goals, in 55 games during the 2023-2024 season. Despite missing 27 games due to injury, the Newfoundland native had his best career season in the NHL so far.
Imagine if he could stay healthy for the entire season-being paired with Dach could turn Newhook into the player the Colorado Avalanche hoped he'd become when they selected him 16th overall in the 2019 draft, just one spot behind his Canadiens teammate Cole Caufield.
This is definitely a name to keep an eye on in the upcoming games.
And what do you think-who will be the breakout player for the Montreal Canadiens this season under Martin St. Louis?
Personally, if I exclude the easy answer of Lane Hutson, I'd go with Oliver Kapanen.
