We have some news about a possible trade involving Joel Armia and a 2nd-round draft pick.
This is really surprising for Kent Hughes, and it's amazing to see how quickly things can change in the National Hockey League.
Joel Armia, who was placed on and ignored by NHL waivers less than a year ago, could now be traded for a 2nd-round pick.
At least, that's what former Montreal Canadiens scout, Grant McCagg, believes.
Joel Armia traded for a second-round pick?
For McCagg, Armia's contract is not a problem, quite the opposite.
«While it was thought that a draft pick would have to be attached to get rid of Armia's contract, the winger had a strong second half of the 2023-24 season. In the eyes of some, including Grant McCagg, Kent Hughes could get a 3rd or even a 2nd-round pick for the Finn.»
- Jeremy Pearman
See his explanations:
«A 6-3 two-way winger on an expiring contract on a 24-goal pace? That would fetch a third-round pick at a minimum.. maybe a second..»
- Grant McCagg
A team like the Boston Bruins might be interested. McCagg continues:
«Joel Armia had 13 goals in his last 45 games. If he can score anywhere close to that in his first 45 of this season and the Canadiens are out of the playoff hunt in early March, his $3.4M cap hit on an expiring contract will be attractive to potential suitors. Armia was a presence in Montreal's run to the finals.»
He raises some good points.
And you, do you believe that Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens could get a 3rd-round pick, or even a 2nd-round pick, in exchange for forward Joel Armia?
Armia, 31 years old, 6 feet 3 inches, and 216 pounds, is a 16th overall pick (1st round) in 2011. Last season, he scored 6 goals and 9 points in eight games with the Laval Rocket.
He added 17 goals in 66 games with the Montreal Canadiens, including 13 goals in his last 45 games.
A situation to watch with the Canadiens!
