Several excellent insiders mentioned it earlier this month, but Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens now have a new priority.

After finally signing young defenseman Lane Hutson, Pierre Lebrun reports that Kent Hughes' next priority is to sign a contract extension with veteran defenseman Mike Matheson, who, by the way, is having a terrific start to the season.
"That's going to be a big priority now for Montreal management, they want to extend [him]; [they] are interested in having that conversation".

- Pierre LeBrun: Re Mike Matheson
This is very interesting information coming from insider Pierre LeBrun, but that's not all!
He also revealed an important (and very significant) update regarding Matheson's demands for his next contract.

Short-term offers for Mike Matheson have all been rejected

So if Kent Hughes thought that Matheson would accept a one- or two-year deal, he can immediately forget about that.
Matheson has turned down those offers and will continue to reject them.
He wants to stay with the Montreal Canadiens - that much is known - but it's also clear that he wants to secure his long-term future with the team, not just for another two or three years.
"He does not want to sign a short term deal, it has to be 4-5 years to make sense for him." - Pierre LeBrun
And you - would you be willing to offer Mike Matheson a contract of more than 4 or 5 years, especially knowing that he could help bring Sidney Crosby to the Montreal Canadiens?
Mike Matheson, 31 years old, is a left-handed defenseman standing 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 196 pounds. He was a first-round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2012 and has become a true cornerstone for the Montreal Canadiens early this season (both in the locker room and on the ice).
This will be a fascinating story to follow here!
