Earlier today, we reported that young defenseman Bogdan Konyushkov, who belongs to the Montreal Canadiens, has signed a new contract in the KHL.
Yes, it delays his arrival in North America. Yes, it pushes back his debut with both the Montreal Canadiens and the Laval Rocket. But the excellent Marco D'Amico just shared some important clarifications that show this might not necessarily be bad news.

"Regarding Konyushkov staying in the KHL for one more year:
If he had signed in June 2026, he would've had to sign a two-year entry-level contract (at age 23), with a capped AHL salary of under $120,000.
He'll earn much more in the KHL while continuing his development.
Then in 2027, he can sign a one-year contract and burn it immediately."

That clearly explains everything!
So Konyushkov remains an intriguing project for the Montreal Canadiens, and this KHL contract is far from a disaster.
The goal for him seems simple: to continue developing in a strong league, earn a solid salary, and prepare for a potential move to North America in 2027.
Personally, I believe this is a situation worth keeping an eye on, as I truly think Konyushkov can become a strong NHL defenseman.
And clearly, I'm not the only one..
Despite being just 22, he's already the most-used player on his KHL team and has already appeared in two KHL All-Star Games.. That's no small feat!
