We can no longer unfortunately say that Filip Mesar is among the top prospects of the Montreal Canadiens and Kent Hughes.
This is despite a good tally of 52 points in 45 games with the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Junior League.
Chosen 26th overall in the 2022 draft, the development of the young Slovak forward has somewhat stagnated over the past year, and some experts are even questioning whether he will eventually have a place in the Canadiens' lineup.
However, as reported by the site Marqueur, there is always the option of including Mesar in a potential trade to acquire a top-6 forward who could immediately help the Canadiens. In fact, there was a recent rumor involving Mesar in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets and a certain Rutger McGroarty.
Filip Mesar comments on the trade rumor involving him
However, during a recent discussion with the organization, the main party involved stated that he is still part of Kent Hughes' plans, and the 20-year-old prospect even agreed to arrive in Montreal earlier this summer to prepare for training camp.
«I should join the Canadiens in mid-August. They called me and said they would like me to come earlier to prepare with the coaches before camp.
I have no idea where the information about Winnipeg came from or who wrote it. On the very day it was mentioned, I was arranging my flight tickets to Montreal. No one at the club has talked to me about a trade.
Of course, it can always happen; the NHL is a 'business' above all, but I have no information about it. It is interesting to note that nothing is mentioned in the Canadian media and that in Slovakia, we are unaware of any such rumor.»
This means that, for now, Filip Mesar is still part of Kent Hughes' plans, and we should see him in time for the start of the Canadiens' training camp next September.
