A second-round pick, 32nd overall in the 2022 draft, the 20-year-old prospect will be attending his third camp with the Habs, and unless he has an extraordinary training camp, he is expected to start the season with the Laval Rocket.
That said, some experts hold him in very high regard, including Craig Button.
As reported by the website DansLesCoulisses, TSN analyst Craig Button appeared on a recent episode of the podcast The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro and said the following:
Button's statement not only shows that he holds Beck in high esteem but also that he has great confidence that Jacob Fowler will one day become a top goalie in the NHL.
We know that Kent Hughes was interested in Yaroslav Askarov before he was eventually traded by the Nashville Predators to the San Jose Sharks in exchange, among other assets, for David Edstrom, a player with a similar profile to Owen Beck.
Interestingly, Edstrom was traded twice in 2024. After being selected 32nd overall by the Golden Knights in 2023, he was involved in the deal that brought Tomas Hertl to Vegas at the last trade deadline.
Returning to the Canadiens' prospect, although some analysts view him as a future fourth-line player, Beck still has excellent potential and finished his junior career in the best way possible, by winning the Memorial Cup.
