Cole Caufield reveals he received a surprising phone call from Bill Guerin

We were treated to an interesting moment earlier today during the press conference of Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield.
As you know, Cole Caufield will not be wearing Team USA colors at the Olympic Games.
Last Friday, Team USA unveiled its 25-man roster for the 2026 tournament, and the name of the Canadiens forward was not on it.
It didn't take two minutes for the news to spark reactions here, especially given Caufield's production this season.
On Wednesday, the player himself confirmed that he received a call last week informing him that he did not make the team.

On the ice, the numbers are significant.
After 42 games, Caufield has 20 goals and 40 points, which places him among the top 10 American scorers this season.
He is also on pace to flirt with a career high in goals, which makes the decision even harder to swallow.
Caufield just turned 25 years old, and he is already established as a major piece of the Canadiens.
His eight-year contract carries a $7.85 million cap hit per season, a clear investment in a player who scores goals and draws attention at the Bell Centre.
From management's side, Bill Guerin reiterated that the selection is not made "based solely on stats," because they want a team and not just individuals.
Fair enough, but in Montreal, when your number 13 puts up 0.95 points per game and stays home, it raises eyebrows.
